Whether your business has 4 or 400 staff, an Intranet
is the weapon of choice for internal advancement. However we'd like
to point out that there are several considerations to be made before
you choose to recycle your Website as the company Intranet as well
(a very common mistake).

The company Website and Intranet are two
completely differing informational spaces. It is of upmost importance
that you realise there is a definite need to have the two spaces
differentiated for multiple reasons.
Staff are not Customers. Your staff do not use an Intranet for the
same reasons, or under the same circumstances, as customers on your
Website. For this reason, the Intranet can forego promotional, marketing,
and sales interface features.
The task-orientations are dissimilar. The flow of communication
and navigation must reflect a work environment to maximize productivity.
Staff should be able to access the information and interface screens
they require in as fewer steps as possible.
Communication delivery needs are not the
same. Your Website is packed
with marketing and sales information to suit an orientation to the
customer. Intranets on the other hand will contain department specific
modules that service that department's information requirements.
Quanity and content of information differs. An intranet will contain
a much higher quantity of information than the company's Website.
Much of the content in this information is also not suitable for
general circulation on the Web; content such as progress reports,
department reports, staff memo's and confidential company documents.
The navigation system for such circumstances needs to be far more
robust than that of a Website.
Intranets operate under completely different
network circumstances.
Modern Intranets are built on high-bandwidth network infrastructure.
Such infrastructure eliminates the bandwidth restrictions of the
Web. Even if your company is connected to the Web via T1 or cable,
that bandwidth is usually shared between many office users. It's
also subject to Internet peak-traffic periods where your connection
speeds usually slow down. Intranets are not subject to such limitations
there fore it is able to comfortably handle rich multimedia interfaces
and high bandwidth data exchange such as video. Your Intranet also
doen not pay for the bandwidth it uses during daily operation, unlike
your Website.
Intranet compatibility requirements are
not as flexibile as the Website. The vast array of different computers and browsers that
are used by the customer to connect to your Website is not the same
scenario as your office circumstances. Since your Intranet operates
in a closed environment, the design and development of an Intranet
need only to be compatibile with your office computers and software.
This allows for a much more flexible design and development pallette
to deliver your Intranet requirements.
