Now for a list of "Don't's"
- Don't bother optimising a page that redirects.
- Don't use robots.txt or meta tags to impede search engine access
to SEO pages.
- Don't use same colour text and background to stuff terms into
your content.
- Don't spam keywords by immediately repeating them.
- Don't use any text styling 4px or under.
- Don't use frames, if you HAVE to, your serps are going to hurt in some engines.
- Don't fill your pages up with internal scripts. Where possible, use links to external scripts.
Actively seek external, one-way, incoming links with the targeted key terms as the anchor text.
Automatic linking software is evil. It's extremely easy to get
listed in link-farms and dodgy directories when using automatic submission
software. You want to maintain a certain level of quality control
over which sites and how they link to your site. The
most valuable links you can get are from highly ranked
Google PR sites. If they're related to your optimised page content,
even better. The very first place to start is the Open Directory Project,
do that a.s.a.p.
Keep records of all external web pages linking to your site. Part
of a good SEO campaign is backlink management. You'll be glad
there's records of all applications sent out come link tweaking time.
When asked for a "Title" of
your site, fit the key-term in there, e.g. "Webhosting Specials",
if possible. The title in most cases will be the anchor text for
the link.
Be sure that the site you are submitting
to will give you a direct link, not a redirect or javascripted
link. You can check by mousing over some existing links and checking
the browser status bar. If you see your domain name, go for it.
If their domain name shows up with bunch of other values tacked on
the end, forget it.
